DA’s Office target of bomb threat

The Erie County District Attorney’s Office received a suspicious, threatening letter Monday that law enforcement officials believe was sent by an incarcerated man.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., a staff member opened an envelope addressed to the District Attorney’s Office. It contained a threatening letter as well as plastic wrap filled with a white, powder-like substance. The letter made reference to ISIS, a spokesperson for the district attorney said.

New York State courts officers, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad, Buffalo HAZMAT and Buffalo police were immediately notified of the situation.

Investigators determined that the substance was crushed soap, the spokesperson said.

The letter had a return address to a state correctional institution and an inmate ID number. The inmate, a member of the Blood Street Gang, is a defendant prosecuted by the office several years ago who is currently incarcerated. The matter remains under investigation.
